Born in Connecticut, Dr. Spock graduated from Yale School of Medicine and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, in 1929. Soon after he began writing books on baby and child care with help from his first wife, Jane Cheney Spock, a civil liberties advocate. As a pediatrician, Dr. Spock was the first to research psychoanalysis as a means to understanding the needs of children and the dynamics of a family. Dr. Spock advocated flexible parenting, and encouraged parents to go by their instincts while parenting. Robert Needlman is a pediatrician, a writer, and the co-author of later editions of Dr. Spock’s Baby And Childcare. Dr. Needlman is a pediatrician working at MetroHealth Medical Center, and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Needleman has also worked at the Boston City Hospital. He received an undergraduate in English literature from Yale University, and has written for the magazine Parent and Child, as well as for the website Yahoo!.
